As announced by Birds, Insects N Creatures Of Asia (BICA) yesterday, BESG has entered into a formal arrangement with BICA to bring the study of birds and their behavior to a wider audience. BESG will make use of relevant BICA’s postings (with permission from contributors) and post them in our website. We will formally acknowledge the cooperative efforts of BICA in each and every posting that originates from their members.
BICA members have been doing a fabulous job as citizen scientists. Their photographs and video clips have provided valuable insights into many aspects of bird behavior.
An excellent example is Wong Weng Fai’s video clip (reproduced above) of adult Grey-rumped Treeswifts (Hemiprocne longipennis) feeding a nestling. According to ornithologist-author Dr David R Wells, the clip provides clear proof of cooperative breeding that was “quite a discovery.” Morten Strange, a well-known author of bird guides, added that “…this video might be the first actual proof showing two males tending to the same nest.”
I have always believe that modern birdwatchers need the aid of a camera (hopefully with video functions), if not a videocam to be able to document exciting events effectively.
