PEACOCK PANSY VISITS BOUGAINVILLEA

on 15th August 2015

“Although Bougainvillea bushes are so widespread all around Singapore, few of us actually pay close attention to the insect visitors. Thus far, the Lime Butterfly (Papilio demoleus malayanus, family Papilionidae, subfamily Papilioninae) has been reported to drink nectar from their flowers LINK.

“On the morning of 22nd July 2014, I had the pleasure of watching a Peacock Pansy (Junonia almana, family Nymphalidae, subfamily Nymphalinae) probing the flowers of Bougainvillea (top, below). It would flit from flower to flower and insert its proboscis in search of liquid nourishment.

“A video clip of this fleeting feeding moment may be previewed here:”
