BAYA WEAVERS – FEEDING ON GRASS SEEDS

on 18th January 2013

“On the evening of 8th December 2012, a flock of Baya Weavers (Ploceus philippinus) was frolicking among the dense labyrinth of Feathery Pennisetum grass (Pennisetum polystachion, family Poaceae) in Perak, Peninsular Malaysia. They were preoccupied with frenzied feeding of the abundant grass seeds on the long stalks. The males were readily recognised by their yellow caps (above).

“The head of the female lacked such attractive colouration (above).

“There was a brief pause in their feeding activity when a Crested Serpent-Eagle (Spilornis cheela) flew overhead.
