Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush – calls

on 2nd July 2012

“A friend was kind enough to invite us to visit a reforestation site that the NGO she belongs to is working on. It is still a work in progress but a delight to see some small hope amidst the destruction of this hill station. The steep road up to the location offered many birds.

“We chanced upon a small party of Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrushes (Garrulax erythrocephalus peninsulae), possibly three to four. These are very shy birds that keep to the shadows and quickly disappear into the undergrowth. So my usual images, without flash, are a bit limited, see post 1 and 2.

“However they were kind enough to keep to the locality and I managed to make a number of call recording: HERE and HERE. Note that there is also a Niltava and White-Tailed Robin softer calls in the background inthe first audio. Chestnut-crowned Laughingthrush calls sound like ‘weuwit-wearr-wey’ in thr first audio. In the second audio, they were the same notes but ‘shorter’ calls i.e. broken up, with a response from another bird.”
